Diet
Hay (Unlimited): The foundation of a healthy diet, Timothy, orchard, or oat hay should be available 24/7. This keeps the digestive system moving and wears down continuously growing teeth.
Fresh Vegetables (Daily): Provide about 1-2 cups of fresh, leafy greens per 6 lbs of body weight. Suitable options include romaine lettuce, kale, parsley, cilantro, dandelion greens, and bok choy. Introduce new greens slowly to avoid digestive upset.
Pellets (Limited): Use high-quality, timothy-based pellets (avoid mixes with seeds or colored pieces). Feed roughly 1/4 cup per 6 lbs of body weight daily.
Treats (Very Limited): Fruit (apples, berries, melon) should only be given in small amounts (1-2 teaspoons) as they are high in sugar.
Water: Fresh water must be available at all times, often in a heavy bowl.
Foods to Avoid
Never feed rabbits chocolate, cookies, bread, nuts, seeds, pasta, dairy, yogurt drops, or crackers. Avoid high-starch foods like potatoes and corn, along with onion-family foods like garlic or chives.
Important Notes by Life Stage
Baby Rabbits (< 7 months): Require unlimited alfalfa hay and pellets.
Adults (7 months – 5 years): Switch to grass hay (Timothy, Orchard) and limit pellets.
Seniors (> 6 years): May need diet adjustments to maintain weight; consult a vet.
Ensure all fresh vegetables are thoroughly washed, and always provide fresh water.
